The transmission has been out 4 times because of the stupid mechanics at the dealership. This last time it would grind every time I shifted into third and fourth. This time they just gave me a replacement. Does anyone else have complaints of the RPMs falling too slowly. Also when I let off the gas, or down shift the car doesn't decelerate. It annoys the crap out of me.

I could be in first or second and take my foot off the gas at 4k RPMs and the car would just keep rolling. I have complained but they say its a normal condition. I think the since the RPMs fall so slowly, its causing the syncros to do more work and causing premature failure. What do you guys think? You should feel some engine braking if your foot is off the gas and the revs will drop in direct proportion to your speed decreasing (e.g. you're at 4k at 40 mph, when you slow down to 20 mph you should be at 2k). If those two things don't correlate, then something is slipping or coming out of gear. Or let an independent mechanic drive it and see if they think it's working right. It's on it's third clutch because Veterans Ford doesn't know what they are doing. I can tell it is the way the car is programmed to drive. While the clutch is engaging, it will slow me down. But when it is engaged, it feels like the PCM will open the IAC as to make it not decel. I think it's strategy programmed to make the car drive more smoothly. But I know how to drive a stick, and I chose a stick because I want to be in control of the throttle. You can see when you take it out of gear while you are rolling, the RPMs won't drop to idle. It tries to match your speed. It's probably trying to minimize engine braking for max fuel economy so it opens the throttle a little. You have control of the transmission, but you don't have control of the throttle anymore nowadays (all electronic). I've only driven manual cars that are about 15 years old, so I know what the feeling of total control is like and why you probably hate all the electronic nannies nowadays. There's only a throttle butterfly. The computer keeps it open the precise amount to maintain idle. No more throttle cables. More sporty driving is especially affected when you downshift before a turn and the car keeps going!

You could try barely pressing the brake (just enough to get the brake lights to come on) or lifting the hand brake one notch at high revs to see if there is a big change in engine braking. The new Focuses have a sport button that keeps the revs high when you take your foot off. I wish the Sport had a stick option, but at least when you manually downshift it the car does slow down. I don't like doing that because it's not good for the clutch! I don't like doing that because it's not good for the clutch! I talked to the Field Service Engineer from Ford. He said that this is a normal condition. It is strategy programmed to increase fuel economy. He also said to just use the service brakes going downhill.
